The Ice Jacket is the garment through which Stone Island has applied its research to color-changing fabrics, and this version features the 3-Phase Reactive treatment.
The nylon ripstop is coated with a glossy, rubberized polyurethane layer containing microcapsules with two pigments that react to different temperature thresholds. The initial deep red lightens and fades to gray when the fabric warms up—for example, upon entering a heated room or upon contact with the hands—and turns dark gray or black when exposed to cold. The design is that of a short parka with a high, adjustable hood, a zip closure covered by a buttoned flap, and two slanted pockets with flaps on the front.
The polyester padding and nylon lining keep you warm, while the drawstrings at the waist and hem, along with the adjustable cuff tabs, allow you to seal the jacket against the wind. On the chest, the Compass badge attaches with buttons and is removable.
