Mount Vernon sees its origin in the area of Jones Falls, in present-day Baltimore, Maryland. Numerous flour or wheat mills were built there around 1810 and, in 1830, many of which were converted into cotton production. One of these mills, when it was converted in 1847, was called "Mount Vernon Mill No. 1". This mill, along with many others in the area, would soon become the Mount Vernon Company, a leading manufacturer of quality cotton fabrics, for clipper ship sails and curtain canvas.

The first years of Mount Vernon are characterized by an interesting historical note, the fabrics made by the company's mill in Baltimore were in fact used by the Union army during the civil war. At the same time, the structure of Tallassee, Alabama, which became part of Mount Vernon in 1900, produced fabrics for uniforms and carbines for the Confederate army.

From the end of the twentieth century, Mount Vernon underwent a series of acquisitions, combinations and transfers, until it was finally reorganized in 1915 as Mount Vernon-Woodbury Mills. The name was changed to Mount Vernon Mills, Inc. in 1956.

The company remained primarily a producer of cotton fabrics in the 1940s when it began producing mixed fabrics with the insertion of synthetic yarns. Net sales in 1946 were around $ 34 million. In the 1960s, the product line had expanded to include items such as drying felts used by paper manufacturers, fabrics for industrial and commercial conveyor belts, fabrics for heavy clothing and yarns for furnishing fabrics.
